Will Somerville began his cricket journey in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, refining his skills before venturing to New Zealand in pursuit of higher-level cricket and a university education. His first-class debut came in 2005 when he represented Otago against Wellington. However, he soon returned to his roots in Sydney, rejoining the Sydney University club.
Somerville’s remarkable performances in Grade cricket and the Toyota Futures League couldn’t be overlooked, and his dedication paid off when he earned a spot in the NSW Blues team at the beginning of the 2014-15 Sheffield Shield season. Over time, he has proven himself as a reliable replacement when Test spinners Nathan Lyon and Stephen O’Keefe are unavailable. They have occasionally joined forces, forming a potent spin duo, especially when the playing conditions are favorable.
In addition to his bowling prowess, Somerville also contributes as a valuable lower-order batsman, showcasing his ability by even scoring a century in First Grade while batting at number 10 for Sydney University.
