Born in Echuca on the Victorian side of the Murray River but raised in the NSW town of Moama, Todd Murphy began his journey as an off-spin bowler at the age of 16. His potential was recognized by spin coach Craig Howard during an under-16s training session in the small town of Rochester. Quickly ascending through the ranks, he established himself as one of the country’s most promising young cricketers.
Murphy’s talent earned him a spot in Australia’s squad for the 2020 U19 World Cup, where he showcased his skills by taking seven wickets from as many games throughout the tournament and warm-up matches. He made his debut in Sheffield Shield for Victoria towards the end of the 2020-21 season. However, it was in 2022 that he had a breakthrough, emerging as one of Australia’s top spinners.
In just his second first-class match, Murphy delivered an exceptional performance, claiming seven wickets and playing a crucial role with an unbeaten 24 runs to secure a memorable Shield victory for Victoria against Tasmania in March. This victory ensured Victoria’s place in the season decider against WA. Reflecting on that game, he stated, “Without that match, I wouldn’t have had the opportunities I’ve received over the last six to eight months. It was a significant turning point in my career, providing me with a solid foundation to build upon, and I look back on it with great fondness.”
Subsequently, he earned a spot on the Australia A tour of Sri Lanka in June and secured a full contract with the Sydney Sixers. Murphy’s strong performance during the tour and an equally impressive display for the Prime Minister’s XI against the West Indies in November reaffirmed his potential. At the halfway point of the 2022-23 Shield season, he is widely regarded as the most prolific spinner, positioning him as the potential successor to Nathan Lyon.
