Rangana Herath’s journey in international cricket began back in 1999. He made his debut in one-day international cricket in 2004, but his path to a permanent spot in the Sri Lankan team was marked by periods of in and out selection. It wasn’t until 2011 that Herath established himself as a premier spinner, filling the void left by the retirement of Muttiah Muralidaran.
With more than 70 ODIs under his belt and a tally of over 70 wickets, Herath represented Sri Lanka in his second ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015, having previously played four matches in the 2011 tournament. In the Test arena, he emerged as Sri Lanka’s primary strike bowler after Muralidaran’s retirement. A standout moment in his career came during the 2011-12 tour of South Africa when he made history by taking an astonishing 9-127 in an innings, setting a world record. Over the course of 83 Test matches, Herath’s impressive record includes an astounding 31 five-wicket hauls.
