Moeen Ali, despite retiring from Test and first-class cricket in 2021, received a sudden recall to the England squad on the eve of the 2023 Ashes series, stepping in due to an injury sidelining the primary spinner, Jack Leach. Ali’s journey towards representing England started at a young age when he earned the honor of playing for his country’s Under-19 team, followed by appearances for the England Lions before his selection for the one-day international and Test sides in 2014. Notably, he led England’s Under-19s to the semi-finals of the 2006 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup in Pakistan.
Beginning his professional career with Warwickshire, Ali transitioned to Worcestershire in 2007 and made an immediate impact, marking his debut with a noteworthy 77 runs. His consistent performances in domestic cricket paved the way for his ODI debut in February 2014 against West Indies, followed by a Test debut against Sri Lanka in June.
Throughout his career, Ali has crafted a reputation as a reliable all-rounder with five centuries to his name, with his highest score being an unbeaten 155 against Sri Lanka in 2016. He has also notched two centuries in the ODI format. In recent times, England has entrusted Ali as their primary spin-bowling option in Test cricket, and he has successfully taken over 100 Test wickets, including his best bowling figures of 6-53 against South Africa. In 2017, Ali achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first player in 100 Test matches to claim a hat-trick at The Oval. This remarkable feat secured victory for England against South Africa in the third Test and played a pivotal role in England’s 2-1 series lead.
