Mark Wood, a fast bowler hailing from Ashington in Northumberland, shares an inspiration with his idol, Stephen Harmison. While he may not possess the same level of pace and bounce as Harmison, Wood has carved his own path to success in county cricket with his unique style of pace bowling.
Wood’s journey in professional cricket began with his first-class debut in 2011. His consistent performances quickly garnered the attention of England selectors, leading to his selection in the England Lions squad. His hard work and dedication paid off when he earned a place in the Test squad for the West Indies tour in 2015, although he did not get an opportunity to play in a Test match during that tour.
His ODI debut soon followed, as he made his mark against Ireland. Wood’s strong performances in county cricket finally earned him a Test debut for England, which took place at the historic Lord’s Cricket Ground in May 2015, against New Zealand. While his best bowling figures in Tests stand at 3-39, his international career has been marred by injury concerns, which have hindered his consistency on the international stage.
