Dean Elgar, a resolute left-handed opening batsman for South Africa, displayed his leadership skills by captaining the South Africa Under-19s during their tour of Sri Lanka in 2006. His debut for the Proteas took place in November 2012, six years after he had first appeared in first-class cricket for Free State.
Throughout his Test career, Elgar has demonstrated his proficiency with eight centuries, attaining his highest score of 140 against New Zealand in 2017. While he made his ODI debut in 2012, he has encountered challenges replicating the success he has achieved in Test cricket, maintaining an average of just 24 in the limited-overs format.
