Arjun Nair, an off-spinner, embarked on his first-class career at the age of 17, representing the NSW Blues against South Australia in Coffs Harbour. He featured in two Shield matches, with his second appearance alongside Test spinner Nathan Lyon against Victoria in Alice Springs.
Nair swiftly ascended through NSW’s ranks. In the 2014-15 season, he not only won both the Under-19 and Under-17 National Championships with NSW Metro but also played for the Australian Under-19 team. His remarkable performance earned him the title of Player of the Final in the 2015-16 season when NSW Metro triumphed over ACT/NSW Academy in the Under-19 National Championships. Additionally, Nair debuted in the Toyota Futures League, where he took eight wickets in a match against the ACT in Canberra, securing his place in the Shield side.
A notable aspect of Nair’s bowling repertoire is his proficiency in delivering a “doosra.” He honed this skill by meticulously studying YouTube videos featuring West Indian spinner Sunil Narine. Nair showcased his all-round capabilities while representing the Cricket Australia XI during the 2016 Matador Cup. In a standout performance against Victoria, he scored 67 runs with the bat and claimed 3-53 with the ball, earning the well-deserved title of the match’s best player.
